DEPARTMENTALIZATION
Pre-K Classes
·
Our Pre-K services three and four-year-old children by offering
them experiences adapted to the growth needs of these age levels.
It shares with the parents the responsibility for promoting sound growth
in a period when growth is rapid and important.
·
The Pre-K classes have a planned program for learning that opens
the door to new interests and enriches already existing ones.
The curriculum offers children opportunities to learn when they show
interest and readiness. It is based on the spontaneous interest of the children
themselves and includes numerous opportunities for first hand experiences.
The teacher's role is to help the children relate new experiences to what
they already know and to broaden their areas of learning.
·
The Pre-K includes:
o
A three-day program for four year olds.
o
A five-day program for four year olds.
o
A two-day program for three year olds.
Kindergarten
·
Kindergarten, a readiness program, is an integral part of the
child's total elementary school program enabling each child to realize his/her
potential more fully. Emphasis is
placed on developing the basic skills in math, reading, phonics, and penmanship,
as well as the child's physical strength and intellectual curiosity, social
skills, emotional strength and self-confidence.
Kindergarten classes are full day sessions.
Primary Grades
·
These classes are primarily self-contained to enable the students
to develop skills with consistency and structure in a caring environment.
Grades 4-8
·
At these grade levels, children are often capable of greater depth
in understanding and independent study.
·
At this level classes are departmentalized.
·
Teachers are given the opportunity to offer the child more
meaningful experiences because they are able to specialize in one area of
curriculum.
PROGRAMS
Religious Program
·
Religion is the underlying reality giving meaning to the students'
experiences at St. Cecilia School to integrate the three-fold dimension of
Christian education: God's message which is proclaimed; fellowship in the life
of the Spirit; service to the Christian community as well as the entire human
community. The program has been set
up to supplement the religious training provided by the family and aims at
leading the child to an ever-deepening life of faith.
Through the use of a basic religion text both the administration and the
entire faculty strive to present the fundamental truths of the Catholic faith.
Participation in the liturgy is also a means of making the faith more
meaningful to children. Liturgies,
prepared by the individual classes, enable the students to become actively
involved, facilitate the teaching of the liturgy, and make Mass a more treasured
part of their lives.
·
In addition to the instructions for the Sacraments provided within
the school program, the parents are to become involved in the students'
preparation for the reception of the Sacraments.
·
Meetings are scheduled for the purpose of helping to acquaint
parents with present day methods of instruction for the Sacraments of the
Eucharist and Reconciliation.
Reading Program
·
Through a variety of teaching methods, the reading program aims at
developing each pupil's top level of performance.
The whole language program, with the inclusion of phonics, spelling and
language skills, is used K-5. Grades
6, 7 and 8 have basic literature texts, which enable them to appreciate classic
and contemporary literature across time and throughout cultures.
The integration of language arts includes critical reading, writing, and
grammar, speaking and listening. The
entire program emphasizes creative dimensions, as well as reinforcement of
skills.
Language Arts Program
·
The primary goal of the elementary language arts program is the
acquisition of effective communication skills. The
communication skills are necessary for students to be lifelong learners.
In St. Cecilia's School environment, the acquisition of language skills
also enables students to proclaim the Good News and to answer the call of the
Church to a life of public witness.
·
Language arts instruction includes the development of skills for
listening, speaking, and reading, writing and viewing.
It is a developmental process that involves the integration of these
skills and continual refinement throughout the students' education.
When sufficiently mastered, spoken and written language skills will
provide the students with verbal and written competencies, which are needed for
continued academic pursuits, and for job opportunities.
·
We believe that language arts skills provide a foundation for the
development of the students' ability to think critically and logically, to
communicate effectively, and to enjoy the lifelong use of language.
Mathematics Program
·
In compliance with the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content
Standards for Mathematics and the Mathematics Curriculum Guidelines for the
Catholic Schools in the State of New Jersey, St. Cecilia's is making every
effort to inspire our students to a greater appreciation of and love for
mathematics as one of the "languages" God uses to communicate the
wonder and symmetry of His beautiful world.
·
A developmentally appropriate curriculum for students is designed
so as to be appropriate for the age span of the children within the group with
attention to the different levels and learning styles of the students.
We vision a strong mathematics program that will produce confident
problem-solvers who value the importance, power and application of mathematics
in their lives. Collaboration,
variety, and opportunity are the cornerstones on which the curriculum is built
in order that students will develop a lifelong appreciation of mathematics and
become productive members of society bringing Christian values to the world.
Science Program
·
We realize that the teaching and learning of science begins and
ends with an appreciation of life as sacred and God-given.
All aspects of the Science Curriculum provide a context in which one can
discover the great truths of the natural world; a world unfolding into countless
expressions of divine presence in the universe.
Inherent in this unfolding are the great truths that each expression is a
revelation of the wondrous diversity and innate sacredness present in the
natural world.
·
The classroom provides an environment where process and knowledge
of science are emphasized. The
science curriculum emphasizes the process of science as a way of learning and
further emphasizes that scientific knowledge is always subject to change based
on additional knowledge. Students
are taught the process of science and are given the opportunity to practice
scientific skills.
Social Studies Program
·
Social Studies is viewed as the integrated study of social
sciences and humanities to promote involvement in civic activities.
The curriculum seeks to create an awareness of our diverse American
nation and the interdependent world.
It
uses concepts and skills in an effort to understand the historical, economic,
geographical, social, political and cultural events within the framework of
Catholic moral principles.
·
Students are encouraged to develop the life-long ability to make
informed and reasoned decisions and to become reflective thinkers.
As enlightened citizens with Catholic values, students should become
active participants in the promotion of peace and justice in our country and the
world.
·
The ultimate aim of the curriculum is to enable our students to
learn about the past and to better understand the present in order to anticipate
and prepare for the future.
Physical Education Program
·
Since St. Cecilia School concerns itself with the education of the
whole person, a well-planned physical education program is included in the
curriculum.
·
Grades K-8 have classes twice a week.
Each student must be prepared with proper attire on that day. All
students wear gym uniforms to school.
·
No one is excused from gym class without a note from the doctor.

areas.

·
Teachers assign appropriate home study to reinforce and supplement
the lessons presented in class. Parents'
interest in a child's homework is essential.
It is the parents' responsibility to provide ample time and opportunity
for the completion of assignments. The
following suggestions may be helpful.
·
Provide a study area.
·
Provide a specific time period.
·
Think positively.
·
Don't pressure your child just for grades.
Don't tell your child he/she doesn't have to complete work he/she does
not want to do, and don't do the work yourself; however, give as much assistance
as possible.
·
Remember that the homework is your child's responsibility and that
work must be done with neatness and accuracy.
·
If your child never has homework or if he/she is having difficulty
