Policy on Administration of Medication
  • St. Cecilia School strongly discourages the administration of either prescription or non-prescription medication in school or on field trips. However, if it is absolutely essential that a student receive medication while under school supervision, the following procedures apply:
    • A parent/guardian should come to the school to personally administer the medication.
    • Parents of students with serious health considerations should make every attempt to attend field trips.
    • The school nurse or principal/secretary will supervise the students taking medication ONLY under the following conditions:
      • The medication must be given to the school nurse or principal/secretary by the parent/guardian.
      • The medication must be in the original pharmacy labeled container with doctor’s orders for the medication to be taken during school time.
      • The parent/guardian and student’s physician must complete and sign an “Authorization to Administer Medication in School” form. This form is available from school.
      • No medicine may be kept in the classroom.
      • Students will be permitted to self-administer medication only for life threatening illnesses or conditions. The parent/guardian must schedule a conference with the school nurse to discuss in detail the need for medication. The parent/guardian and the student’s physician must complete and sign an “Authorization for Self-Administration of Medication in School” form. This form is available from the school.

Emergency Procedures
  • When a child becomes ill in school, the parents will be notified. It is the parents’ responsibility to see that the student is taken from school and given proper care. Parents must come to the school office for their child. They may not go to the classroom.
  •  Parents are required to complete an EMERGENCY CARD with their address, telephone numbers both at home and at work, as well as two local adults who can be reached in case the parents are unavailable. If emergency information is changed in any way, parents are required to contact the school immediately.
